In Annapolis, we face an environmental crisis. Severe storm surges, flooding, loss of trees, and water quality in the Chesapeake are just some of today’s issues. We’re also tasked to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as mandated in Maryland’s Climate Solutions Now Act of 2022. It’s complicated and environmental priorities aren’t isolated—they connect to transportation, housing, education, and basic human rights. How can people travel to work and manage their daily lives while reducing their reliance on fossil fuels? How can we expand housing while conserving resources and protecting ecosystems? How can we ensure that our vulnerable populations are safe? The City is already grappling with such questions, as outlined in the Environmental Sustainability section of the new Comprehensive plan. The Annapolis City Dock Project will address downtown flooding and rising seas. To explore other potential actions, my campaign held an Environmental Roundtable in August with Alderman Rob Savidge, at which experts and advocates emphasized the need to involve the community in solutions. Other suggestions included:
Together, we will seize the opportunity to make Annapolis a national leader in climate resilience - setting the standard for cities across the country. We must harness our collective talent, embrace innovative solutions, and commit to a future where every resident enjoys the benefits of a united, thriving, and healthy Annapolis. The stakes couldn't be higher, and this is the time to act. Let's unite to protect what we love about Annapolis - our water, our air, our neighborhoods, and our people - ensuring generations to come can enjoy the charm of Annapolis. By leading the way on climate resilience, we won't just safeguard our city - we'll inspire the nation. Sincerely, Jared Littmann Candidate for Mayor of Annapolis |
