Public Safety

I’ve continued to learn more about the issues that are important to you, as a community. At most of the campaign events we’ve held so far, you’ve raised concerns about public safety. While Annapolis is generally a safe city, we were all shocked and distressed to learn about three middle school children who were shot while getting off a school bus in their own neighborhood two weeks ago. Fortunately, none of the injuries were fatal, but the experience was traumatizing to those who were hurt, witnessed the event, or were connected to it in some fashion.

There are no easy or simple solutions, but I know that community efforts like Donna Johnson’s Eastport Helping Eastport supporting Harbour House and Eastport Terrace or Pastor Sheryl Menendez’s work to establish a clubhouse in Robinwood are part of a path forward. They are just two of many community heroes and organizations who are providing support to those who live in public housing.

Public safety is important to you, as it is to me. That is why I am a volunteer trial judge for the county’s Police Accountability Board, attended a “Community Trauma and Resiliency” training opportunity offered by the county, meet regularly with former Annapolis Chief of Police, Joe Johnson, and communicate with other retired Annapolis police officers to discuss issues and ideas to curb crime in the city. There is more to listen and learn about, and so much more to do.

I’ve also continued to attend monthly meetings of the Housing Authority for the City of Annapolis (HACA) and meet with a variety of people knowledgeable about public housing. HACA is currently in crisis mode with falling revenues and inadequate resources. I’m following their work closely with the goal of being part of the solution.

Join Mayor Buckley and community members in a Peace March on Friday May 17th in the Annapolis Walk and Bywater Communities. The march will be to support an end to gun violence. Participants will gather at the parking lot next to Safeway on Forest Drive at 5pm. The march will start at 5:30 p.m.

Sincerely,

Jared Littmann
