Talk about a great learning process! Attending community events and meeting new people has been a reminder of the countless organizations in Annapolis that provide services to disadvantaged communities. These groups provide services beyond and more efficiently than any level of government could do thanks to local volunteers and donations from people like you. For example, the Center of Help provides emergency services for our immigrant community to help them navigate life more smoothly. It’s a one-stop shop for guidance on housing, health care, education, and more. Imagine moving to someplace where the language and customs are brand new to you. How could you settle in and thrive without help?  I also visited the Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC), an adult education and job readiness service that offers GED preparation and free classes to help people learn English and find work. And I watched a graduation ceremony organized by Toni Strong-Pratt, a lifelong Annapolitan whose People Builders consulting helps families go from government dependency to self-sufficiency. She launched My Sistah’s Keeper (MSK) and later My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) to transform women’s and men’s lives after trauma so they can move out of public housing, build healthy relationships, start businesses, and be solid parents and community members. These are just a few of the many groups in Annapolis. Other people and groups offer food assistance (Alderwoman Karma O’Neil’s Food Friday Program, for example), housing, re-entry job training and assistance, tutoring, and more. You can find more information about those groups here. What these groups do is essential and unique – and they need funds to keep going. Please click the links below to donate!
